Color family metafield

Used when each color of a product is its own Shopify product (often for SEO). The metafield lets each PDP show siblings as additional color swatches.

Setup

Settings → Custom data → Products → Add definition:

• Name: Color family
• Namespace and key: custom.color_family
• Type: List of product references

Populate

Open each product in the family. In the Color family field, reference the OTHER products in the family.

Each product needs to reference the others — there's no auto-mirror. Worth doing once for evergreen products.

Theme setting

Theme settings → Product → Enable color family swatches — toggle. If off, the metafield is read but not rendered.

Where it appears

• Product card — extra swatches alongside variant color swatches
• PDP — extra swatches in the variant picker (or as their own row if the product has no color option)
• Quick view — same as PDP

Each sibling swatch links to that product's URL.

Tips

• Use the same color_family group for related products (e.g., a hoodie + a tee in matching shades).
• Don't include unrelated colors — the visual cue is "these are versions of the same thing".
